Let me tell you a secret…The time will never be “right.” You’ll always say something to yourself like:
- I need to earn that certification before I’m taken seriously.
- I don’t have enough experience under my belt.
- I have no idea how to start a business.
- I shouldn’t leave my current job…I’m not that burnt out.
- I haven’t earned my license yet so I’m not qualified to work in this field (this is sometimes, but not always true).
- I have so many things I need to do before I can start!
If it always feels like you need to do X before you start your own online business, you’re not alone. But here’s a reality check: When you get these things—that certification, those few more months of clinical experience, that extra year in the job you hate—you won’t magically have clients knocking down your door to work with you.
It doesn’t work like that.
So how does it work? YOU HAVE TO START. Start where you’re at, with what you have and who you are. Growing and scaling will take time, but landing your first few clients will provide you with more insight and understanding than any certification course will ever teach you. Now, I’m not knocking continuing education, but I’m reminding you that it’s not the key to success. The longer you postpone putting yourself out there, the longer it’ll take for you to become the entrepreneur you’ve always wanted to be.
I’ll be honest with you…I was stuck in that cycle. From my bachelor’s to my master’s, internship hours, licensure, and working in a job that was draining my heart and soul. I knew that I was meant for something greater than running on a hamster wheel. I realized that waiting for the “perfect moment” to take the proverbial leap would never come…I would be waiting forever. So, I took the leap and started my own business as a side hustle (because no, you don’t need to quit your full-time job right away in order to start your side biz). And eventually, I embraced the risk of letting go of my safe and secure—albeit draining—job for the adventure of entrepreneurship. At long last, I made the decision of a lifetime—putting myself first.
If you want to do work that lights you up (and it is possible), to be your own boss, to make your own schedule, and to affect change in a meaningful way, don’t wait another day to start making that dream a reality.
Is it scary? 100%. Will it be worth it? Well, if you keep putting it off, you’ll always wonder.
